Cash limit in Italy

12/19/2025
Cash limit in Italy The cash limit defines the maximum amount that may be paid in cash in Italy. The purpose of this rule is to combat money laundering and tax evasion as well as to promote traceable payment flows.

Since 1 January 2023, the cash limit in Italy has been set at 4.999,99 €. Cash payments from €5,000 onwards are therefore not permitted and must be made using traceable payment methods:

  • Bank transfer
  • Debit or credit card
  • Bank or cashier’s cheque

Foreign tourists are exempt from this rule and may therefore make purchases of up to 15.000 € also in cash.

Prohibition of artificial splitting

It is not permitted to artificially divide a single transaction into several smaller cash payments below the threshold. Such an arrangement is considered an inadmissible circumvention of the cash limit.

Sanctions for violations

Sanctions range from 3.000 € to 50.000 € and apply to both the payer and the recipient. For amounts above 250.000 €, the penalty is multiplied by five.
